Homework:
Enjoy yourself, spend time with friends and family, and play some good music!
HOW TO PRACTICE!
1) Schedule Regular Practice Times
Set aside the same time every day to practice, even if you don't feel like it. Once you get started you will usually find yourself getting sucked into the music.
2) Divide Your Available Time Into Two or More Segments
If you have 1 hour, divide your time up into two half hour sessions. Feel free to do more than that though
3) Always Have Three or More musical and Technical Works Which You Are Practicing Currently
You get less fatigued/frustrated if you keep changing what you are working on. 'Excessive practicing of a single composition is artistically and spiritually destructive.'
4) Have a Practice Plan
Provide time for warmup and each composition/etude/exercise you are studying
5) Practice Everything Every Day
(not old repertoire) Build upon the previous day's practice. If you practice something, then don't play it for a couple days you run the risk of repeating the previous practice session.
6) Spend Time Playing Through New Repertoire
Even if a piece is new practice playing through it a couple times, otherwise it may seem difficult to keep going because you are practicing stopping as well as the trouble sections. It also helps to see the work as a whole and think in phrases.
7) Practice Both Slowly and In Tempo
Slow practice will cure almost any problem, but don't get addicted to playing slowly only. Alternate back and forth. Even if a piece is more familiar, it can be helpful to do a slow run through every once in a while.
8) Practice Difficult Spots While Fresh
Start your practice with the trouble spots, get them out of the way. If you save them for later you run the risk of running out of time and never getting to them during that practice session.
9)Change the Order of Works in Your Schedule
Don't get stuck in a routine, stay flexible.
Example Routine:
Scales and Etudes - 30 min
Concerto - 45 min
Sonata - 30 min
Short Pieces - 30 min
Most Difficult Etude - 15 min
Play through earlier material - 30 min
